IRAN: Unemployment rate has risen by 1.5% in the second quarter of 2016

Iran’s Center for Statistics states that unemployment is roughly 25% among young people; an increase of 2.5% in the past year.

The Iranian Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Ali Rabiei, warned back in 2014 that if the economic growth did not reach at least 7% per year, that Iran would not be able to “curb unemployment".

The economic growth in the past year was roughly 1%. This coupled with reports from the Iranian Statistical Center and the International Monetary Fund, prove that Rouhani’s government has been unable to curb unemployment.

Rouhani’s government may have been counting on the nuclear deal between Iran and the West to give a much, more dramatic boost to the economy. The economy is still struggling with the consequences of the sanctions and government mismanagement.

The International Monetary Fund said in a report last week that Iran’s employment rank has dropped three places since last year.

Women, young people, those in urban areas are most likely to be affected by unemployment.
