Migrants: record 2015 asylum requests to EU, over 1.2 mln

BRUSSELS - In 2015 there were 1,255.600 requests for political asylum presented in the 28 member states of the EU. This was an absolute record that was more than double the level of the requests presented in 2014 (562,680). According to data published by Eurostat, some 29% of the requests were presented by Syrians (362.775), 14% by Afghans (178.230), 10% by Iraqis (121.535), 5% by Kosovars (66.885) and Albanians (65.935), 4% by Pakistanis (46.400), 3% by Eritreans (33.095), 2% by Nigeriana (29.915) and Iranians (25.360). The remaining 26% were of other nationalities.

The country that received most requests in absolute was Germany with 32.5% of the total (441,800, an increase of 155%, ahead of Hungary (174.435, up 323%, 13,9% of the total) and Sweden (156.110, up 108%, 12,4% of the total).

In Italy there were 83.245 requests (up 31% compared with the 63.655 of 2014), more than in France (70.570, up 20% compared to the 58.845 of the previous year).

The greatest number of requests for asylum compared to the population was registered in Hungary (17.699 requests per million inhabitants), surpassing the levels in Sweden (16.016 per million), Austria (9.970 per million), Finland (5.976 per million) and Germany (5.441 per million). In Italy they were 1.369 per million inhabitants.

The biggest increase compared to last year was recorded in Finland (up 822%, passing from 3.490 in 2014 to 32.150 last year), ahead of Hungary (up 323%) and Austria (up 233%), Belgium (up 178%) and Spain (up 167%).

As far as concerns the nationality of those asking for asylum, in Italy the biggest share was of Nigerians (21%, 17.780) Pakistan (12%, 10.285) and Gambians (10%, 8.015).

The Syrians were the most numerous in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Holland, Romania, Sweden and Hungary.
