Amir Amirgholi Sentenced To 21 Years In Prison

HRANA News Agency – Amir Amirgholi, former student activist and political prisoner in ward 8 of Evin prison, has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court presided by Judge Salvati. In accordance with Article 134 of the Penal Code and the aggregation of the crime, the maximum applicable punishment of this sentence is up to seven years.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), “insulting religious sanctities”, “insulting the Supreme Leader”, “gathering and colluding to act against the national security”, “disturbing public order by participating in illegal gatherings”, and “propaganda against the regime” are some parts of the charges against Amir Amirghpli.

This prisoner’s lawyer, Nemat Ahmadi told HRANA’s reporter that he had heard the verdict, but he had not seen it yet.

According to Article 134 of the new Penal Code on offenses leading to punishment, when the committed crimes are more than three, the determined penalty for each exceeded the maximum statutory regulations as long as they do not exceed the maximum plus half of it. In each of the charges only the maximum penalty is applicable for the most severe punishment, and if that is reduced or converted to one of the legal causes or cannot be executed, the next most severable punishment shall be imposed.

The last hearing for Amir Amirgholi was held on 13th January.

Earlier, on 19th October a court hearing of this political prisoner was postponed.

Amir Amirgholi, former student activist was arrested on December 1, 2014 and was held in solitary confinement for about two months in ward 209 of Evin prison and was under interrogation and after his interrogations he was transferred to ward 8 in Evin prison.

He was charged with gathering and collusion against the national security, propaganda against the regime, blasphemy and insulting the leadership, by Naseri, the Branch 6 of persecution’s investigator, in Evin.

According to one of his relatives; “Allegations of collusion and propaganda against the regime are because of his participation in a gathering to support Kobani, and blasphemy and insulting the leadership allegations are because of what he had posted on his personal Facebook page.”

Amir Amirgholi had been earlier arrested because of his political and student activities in September 2008 and subsequently was expelled from the university.

More than a year has passed since the arrest of this leftist political activist and this prisoner is now in the second year of his imprisonment sentence in ward 8 of Evin prison. Ward 8 is currently one of the worst wards of the Evin prison where many political prisoners are being held in a high population, with minimum facilities.
