Americans who travel to Iran risk arrest, U.S. warns

U.S. citizens traveling to Iran, especially Iranian-Americans, are at a high risk of being arrested and detained in the Islamic Republic, the U.S. State Department warned Friday.

The official warning seeks to “reiterate and highlight the risk of arrest and detention of U.S. citizens, particularly dual national Iranian-Americans, in Iran,” the State Department said.

The warning, originally published by Reuters, largely echoes a similar warning about travel to Iran issued in August.

“Various elements in Iran remain hostile to the United States,” the latest warning continues.

According to the notice, Iranian have “continued to harass, arrest, and detain U.S. citizens, in particular dual nationals” since the nuclear deal was signed in July.

The travel notice was issued just days after five Americans, including four dual Iranian nationals, were released by Iran in a prisoner swap.
