Argentina attempts to whitewash Iran’s role in 94's bombing

File this one as predictable: In a newly released tape from 2012, Argentina’s former foreign minister admits that Iran was behind the 1994 bombing of a Buenos Aires Jewish center.

But Hector Timerman’s conversation with local Jewish leaders is the first concrete admission to become public.

And it bolsters the evidence that Argentina’s government tried to cover up Iran’s involvement in the blast, which left 85 dead and hundreds wounded.

It was that evidence that special prosecutor Alberto Nisman was scheduled to unveil just hours after he was found dead in his apartment, mysteriously shot to death.

Nisman reportedly had proof that then-President Cristina Kirchner and Timerman — whose arrests he was going to demand — had cut a secret deal to have their joint investigative commission whitewash Iran of all responsibility for the attack. In return, energy-starved Argentina would get Iranian oil and an export market for its grain.

In the tapes, which were obtained by the author of a new book on Nisman’s death, Timerman is heard arguing with Jewish leaders, who were pressing him to find another source for oil besides Iran.

“If there was anyone else,” he said, “they wouldn’t have planted the bomb” — apparently suggesting the attack was meant to pressure Argentina into negotiating with Tehran over an oil deal.

Later, according to the tape, Timerman repeated: “Eighteen years ago, they planted the bomb.”

Nisman’s decade-long probe established that Hezbollah carried out the bombing on orders from Iran. No one has yet been held to account — either for the attack or for Nisman’s death.

That’s worth pondering as the Obama administration continues its headlong rush to lift sanctions against Iran and help it overcome its reputation as a sponsor of terror.
