Thursday 03 December 2015California shooting horror: More than a dozen killedGunmen stormed a healthcare facility in Southern California on Wednesday and opened fire — killing at least 14 and leaving another 14 seriously injured, officials said. Upwards of three killers clad in military attire are still on the loose, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a press conference. “These were people who came prepared,” he said. “They were armed with long guns not hand guns.” The carnage began at around 11:15 a.m., when the shooters targeted the Inland Regional Center at 13th Street and Waterman Avenue in the San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The suspected shooters escaped from the building in a dark-colored SUV, and remain on the run, according to reports. The attackers were wearing in “military style” attire, according to police. They first opened fire inside a conference center, where Inland Regional was hosting “some kind of function today, an event, and during that event is when multiple shooters came in and just started shooting,” Sergeant Vicki Cervantes told KABC. Footage showed a chaotic scene outside the building, as the wounded were being treated on the sidewalk, as others were ushered into ambulances on stretchers. Marcos Aguilera, whose wife in the building as the shooting unfolded, said a gunman entered the building next to his spouse’s office and opened fire. “They locked themselves in her office. They seen bodies on the floor,” Aguilera told KABC. People trapped inside were sending text messages to their loved ones as the hid from the gunmen. One man told CBS Los Angeles that his daughter, Holly, sent him a text, saying, “Dad shooting at my work, shot people in office. Waiting for cops to catch him. Pray for us.” The father texted back: “Hi find a good spot hide now.” “I am but we are locked in an office,” she replied. “Cops SWAT helicopter, everything here.” Dozens of people were also seen exiting a building with their hands up, walking in single-file lines. A slew of law-enforcement vehicles including bullet-proof police cars, fire trucks and ambulances lined up outside. Inside, a bomb squad detonated an explosive device with a robot, according to The Los Angeles Times. The neighborhood where gunfire erupted included a golf course, an office park and a school for the developmentally disabled. The Inland Regional Center provides services for more than 30,000 people with developmental disabilities with the goal of providing them with a “typical lifestyle,” according to its Facebook page. It’s a nonprofit agency funded by the state Department of Developmental services and has about 670 employees. Investigators have yet to clear the facility, located at 1365 S. Waterman Avenue. President Obama has been briefed on the tragedy by Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco. http://nypost.com/2015/12/02/shooting-reported-in-california/ |
