NEW YORK (AP) — Iranian-Americans and their supporters are demanding the removal of the country's government.
Thousands gathered Monday near the United Nations, where Iran's president was scheduled to speak.
Protesters say more than 2,000 dissidents have been executed in the past two years.
This year, a key issue is the Iran deal just approved by Congress that would lift economic sanctions in return for restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.
A former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Bill Richardson, spoke at the rally. He says he supports the nuclear part of the deal but is very concerned about a possible arms escalation that could endanger Israel.
The rally was led by two groups: the Organization of Iranian-American Communities and the National Council of Resistance of Iran.
