Friday 29 May 2015Iran uses W.H. job application as evidence in reporter trial
Iran is using an unsuccessful job application to work in the Obama administration as evidence in the trial of Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post reports. Rezaian is the Post's Tehran bureau chief and has been held in an Iranian prison since July 2014, but was only recently charged on various counts, including espionage. His trial is currently being held in Iran, but behind closed doors. Martin Baron, the Post's executive editor, said that the Iranians cited a 2008 online job application Rezaian filled out as evidence he is acting on behalf of the U.S. government. According to Baron, Rezaian filled out the application shortly after President Barack Obama's election, citing his familiarity with Iran as the basis for a possible job, but received an unsigned, form response by email and was never hired. "There is no justice in this system, not an ounce of it, and yet the fate of a good, innocent man hangs in the balance. Iran is making a statement about its values in its disgraceful treatment of our colleague, and it can only horrify the world community," Baron said in a statement earlier this week. http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/05/iran-uses-wh-job-application-as-evidence-in-reporter-207881.html |
