Iran's deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, confirmed that Khaled Mashal, the political leader of Hamas, is expected to visit Tehran. He said a date had not yet been scheduled. "Relations between Hamas and Iran never stopped at any point," said the Iranian
official, effectively confirming the morning report by Lebanese newspaper as-Safir about the impending visit.
That report said Hassan Nassrallah, Hezbollah's secretary general, has been acting as a mediator between Hamas, Iran, and Syria, in an attempt to finally return Hamas to the "axis of resistance" after a rift caused by Hamas's stance towards the Assad regime's behavior in its civil war.
