Poverty reaches new heights in Iran

Shahrzadnews - A number of Iranian trade leaders have written an open letter to the Minister of Works, complaining that they and their families are living below the poverty line. According to the government, this applies to anyone earning less than $1000 a month. In fact the government’s own statistics show that more than 3.5 million manual and casual workers earn less than $200 a month.

In their letter the leaders reminded the minister that almost 90% percent of the country’s working-class families live below the poverty line, with medical expenses absorbing a large proportion of their earnings.
