Speaker John Boehner said the United States shouldn’t lift any sanctions on Iran until they stop “all development of their nuclear program.”
Speaking to reporters in the Capitol Thursday morning, Boehner said “there is no reason for us to lift” sanctions on Iran until they completely halt their nuclear program.
“We’ve been down this road with Iran many times,” he said.
The Obama administration has been seeking a deal that would temporarily relax some sanctions in exchange for Iran scaling back its uranium enrichment program. The White House, State and Treasury departments have been lobbying Senate Democrats and Republicans to hold off on additional economic sanctions aimed at Iran’s oil industry. They are meeting resistance in the Senate.
The House earlier this year passed a stiff Iranian sanction package.
