Iran denies Ayatollah has Facebook page

AAP

Iran has denied its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has an account on Facebook.

The social networking site is officially banned in Iran.

The clergy considers it to be un-Islamic and says membership is a sin.

There was speculation last week that the new Khamenei page on Facebook was created by his office.

But this was denied by Iran's internet department, which said the new page, as well as previous ones, was probably created by his supporters.

Despite heavy restrictions and filtering imposed by the government, at least 17 million Iranians have a Facebook account, according to official figures released in October 2011.
More than five million websites are reportedly blocked in Iran, but Iranians use proxy software and virtual private networks to access them.
