“The student will perish and not accept anguish”

Committee of Human Rights Reporters – According to sources from Evin prison, last week on December 8, detainees in Ward 350 and the women’s ward in Evin prison jointly observed Student Day.

Approximately 60 political prisoners held in Ward 350 and the women’s ward took part in a ceremony commemorating the 16 students who lost their lives on December 8, 1954 in the path towards freedom in Iran and the struggle against tyranny.

In Ward 350 political prisoners commemorated Student Day while singing “Yar-e Dabestani” (my school yard friend) and “Ey Iran.” The women joined by singing “Yar-e Dabestani” and “Khoon-e Arghavanha” (purple blood). The slogan “the student will perish and not accept anguish” reverberated in the prison environment.

Currently scores of students, student activists, university professors, and activists advocating the rights to education are held behind bars in prisons across the country due to their student related activities and participation in protests.
