Bonfire near the regime’s nerve center: Defying a ban on celebrations of Iran’s traditional marking of springtime, youths are shown in this video taking control of Jami Street in the Iranian capital, close to the fortified compound of Supreme Leader Khamenei and other top regime figures.
The young people are celebrating Chahar Shanbeh Soori on March 15, the eve of the last Wednesday before the Persian new year. The traditional pre-Islamic celebration involves the use of bonfires to mark spring and the fight of good over evil. Iranians jump over the bonfires as part of the springtime rite. Khamenei had personally issued an order banning such celebrations, but the young protesters took the bonfires practically to his front gate.
