Hundreds of workers protests at tire plant

Hundreds of workers working at the Kian (formerly known as Alborz) tire manufacturing plant have gone on strike.

According to opposition website Saham News, the workers, who were joined by their family members, were on strike over unpaid wages. They held placards while sitting on the side of the Ayatollah Saeidi motorway in southern Tehran.

Anti-riot forces were also close to the scene preventing others from joining the protests, yet reports suggest security forces avoided confrontation with the workers due to the sheer size of the crowd.

In the past two years, Kian Tire employees have held a number of strikes to protest unpaid wages. One of the workers told Radio Farda that the conditions at the plant had worsened after it was bought by the government and run by the Ministry of Industry and Mines.
