Iran will not attend IIPU meeting in Abu Dhabi: MP

Tehran Times – MP Kazem Jalali, Iran’s representative at the executive committee of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU), has announced that Iran will not attend the upcoming extraordinary meeting of the IIPU called by the United Arab Emirates in protest at the illegality of the meeting.

“We will not participate in this meeting in protest at the illegal step taken by the Emirates (to call an extraordinary meeting to revise the union’s constitution) and we announce that any ratification, which may be made at the meeting, undermining the Islamic unity is invalid and unacceptable,” Jalali said on the sidelines of the parliament session on Sunday.

The lawmaker said the UAE move is illegal because it goes against the IIPU regulations.

According to the union’s rules, the IIPU should hold a meeting every two years, he explained, adding Iran only recognizes the next year’s meeting in Indonesia.
