Labour and children’s rights activist Behnam Ebrahimzadeh has been sentenced to twenty years in prison based on security charges.

A worker at a polyethylene pipe manufacturing in Shoorabaad close to Tehran, Ebrahimzadeh had also been a defender of children’s rights. He was arrested by Intelligence Ministry agents on 12 June 2010 in Tehran.

According to the Kaleme website belonging to Green Movement leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, branch 15 of the revolutionary court handed down the twenty-year jail-term. Based on this harsh sentence issued by judge Salavati, Ebrahimzadeh must serve ten years in Rajaei Shahr prison in Karaj as well as another ten years in Tehran’s Evin prison.

During International Workers’ Day on May 1, 2009 Ebrahimzadeh was arrested along with other fellow workers in Tehran’s Laleh Park and subsequently sent to prison. They were later released under heavy bail.

Alongside his activities with regards to street children and workers’ concerns, Ebrahimzadeh is also a blogger focusing mainly on themes such as child labour and children’s rights.
