Opposition seeks to foment economic unrest: police chief

TEHRAN, Oct. 2 (MNA) – Opposition seeks to mount an “economic sedition” after the implementation of the subsidy reforms, said National Police Chief Ismail Ahmadi Moqaddam.
“The remnants of the last year’s political sedition (post-election unrest) are continuing their activities. The sedition has taken other shapes such as economic sedition,” Ahmadi Moqaddam said on Friday.

Following the implementation of the economic reforms, some people may seek to close the markets and stage strikes, but the police forces will defend the government and will firmly deal with those who seek to “complement the enemies’ economic pressures,” he added.

He also emphasized that “the police has never enjoyed the current level of preparedness.”

Deputy National Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan has also asserted that the police forces will completely defend the government during the implementation of the subsidy reforms.

The government has planned to eliminate the subsidies on fuel, energy and some goods within five years.

Experts have raised concern over the inflationary effects of the plan on low-income families.
