Ministries of Telecommunications, Culture and Islamic Guidance, Intelligence, Justice, Islamic Propaganda plus the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office assess the “appropriateness” of the sites and decide whether they should be filtered.
Shahrzadnews: A number of Iranian ministries and government agencies are directly involved in the filtering of websites deemed to be “harmful to the public interest.” Various bodies meet regularly to add more sites to the list.
In particular a working committee consisting of representatives from the Ministries of Telecommunications, Culture and Islamic Guidance, Intelligence, Justice, Islamic Propaganda plus the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office assess the “appropriateness” of the sites and decide whether they should be filtered.
According to a spokesman for the committee, “Decisions whether to filter a website or not are based largely on public opinion. The public are naturally very sensitive towards sites that disparage religious beliefs and sacred practices, as well as those which publish obscene material. Such sites are not in the interests of our country.”
