Iran Human Rights, August 12: A man has been sentenced to 6 months in prison and 30 lashes for stealing a pair of shoes from the keeper of a mosque in Raah Ahan square in Tehran, reported the Iranian daily newspaper Etemaad.

The keeper had forgiven the thief, but upon his arrest, he was tried for theft. "He should receive this punishment according to Iran’s Islamic penal code, item 656", the judge, Mohammad Reza Givaki said. Givaki added, "the actual sentence is 6 months to 3 years in prison with 74 slashes".

Earlier in July a man was flogged 70 times so severly that it led to public protests and the authorities had to leave the area and postponed flogging of the other man.
