Iraqi police said a roadside bomb had killed five people riding minibuses in Baghdad. An officer told the AP the bomb went off near a bridge in the mostly Shiite Hurriyah neighborhood around 10 a.m. Wednesday. According to him, a woman and 7-year-old boy were among the dead, and at least 10 other people are wounded.
Meanwhile, police said two mortar rounds hit a busy street in the central Baghdad area of Karrada, killing a civilian and wounding five others.
In another development, the U.S. military said it had captured an Iranian-trained bomb expert southeast of Baghdad. A military statement conveyed the man is believed to have traveled to Iran several times for explosives training, and has many Iranian contacts who help him smuggle weapons and bomb-making materials into Iraq.
It said American forces, acting on intelligence, raided the man's house Wednesday and subdued him without firing any shots.
