2007 Sunday 11 FebruaryHungry workers: “Our wives and children are staving…we will all go on hunger strike”On Monday morning, February 5th, more than 1000 workers from Pars Leon factory in the town of Khorramabad began a hunger strike; the workers have gone on strike in order to protest the lack of proper factory management, as well as the provincial officials’ neglect. The regime-run news agency ILNA reported that the workers explained that their unpaid salaries and benefits for 2 month, short term contracts that last anywhere from 3 to 8 months, the non-payment of the elderly workers’ retirement package and severance pay were among many reasons for the strike. One of the workers said: “Our wives and children are staving…we will all go on hunger strike. In the past there were strikes inside the factory, the labor and social affairs bureau of the province and all the officials made many promises to investigate and resolve our issues, which are all in fact quite legal. After several months of these strikes, nothing happened.” |
