2006 Thursday 16 NovemberTwo labor activists sentenced to prisonBranch one of the revolutionary court of the city of Saghez (province of Kurdistan) sentenced Mahmood Salehi and Jalal Hosseini to 4 and 2 years in prison for taking part in the 2004 international workers’ day rally in that city. In an interview with the reporter from the regime-run news agency ILNA, Mohammad Sharif, the defense attorney for the 2 men, announced the charges and the verdict in this case. Sharif prudently described his clients’ case as “society’s complicity to commit such crimes” and said: “According to the information given to me by my clients, they are having their charges reviewed. Salehi and Hosseini were previously sentenced to 5 and 3 years for taking part in ‘an unlawful gathering’ but the court of appeals reduced their sentences by one year each.” |
