Mohammad Khatami confessed to quashing July 1999 student uprising

Iran Press News: According to regime-run news agency, Mullah Mohammad Khatami, former president of the Islamic regime in an interview with the Jameh Jam TV - a regime-run media outlet affiliate outside Iran – called the student activist who took part in the July 1999 uprising, nothing more than provocateurs and revolutionaries and confessed to calling on his administration to suppress them and quash the movement.

This regime-run news agency reported: "Khatami pointed out that the July ‘99 [student uprising] is my worst memory of my 8 years in office. The first issue was the manner in which the students were originally dealt with and then of course, after that, the trouble-makers came on the scene and then naturally, the most important function of the regime at that point, was to deal with them head on."

Mullah Khatami, then referring to his speech in December 2005 gathering of students at Tehran University, claimed: "One of my good days was my December 2005 speech for the students. Of course a group of students protested about preposterous issues on that occasion too, however, they were allowed to object to the head of their government without fear of reprisal or prosecution.*”

* Editor’s note: The names of the student who did protest to Khatami that day were in fact recorded and added to their university files. Ther were later held accountable for that among other charges brought against them by the university management.
