2006 Thursday 28 SeptemberTwo student activists under torture in prisonIran Press News: The status of two student activist Kheirollah Derakhshandi and Abolfazl Jahandar who are reportedly being held in Evin prison’s infamous ward 209, is not only ambiguous but there is great concern for their safety as well. After nearly 40 days of detention the reasons behind the arrest and detention of these two individuals who were active members of leading student associations, remains uncertain and they are said to be held in solitary confinement. According to the News branch of the student committee for the defense of political prisoners, the two student activist, are for the time being, under heavy interrogation and since their arrest and detention in ward 209 (that is run by the ministry of intelligence and security) have not been given permission to meet with lawyers. Derakhshandi was only permitted to visit with his family once. Abolfazl Jahandar was a member of the central council of the students association of Allameh Tabatabaei University as well as a member of the general council of the office of fostering unity; he only recently graduated. Kheirollah Derakhshandi was among the student activists from the city of Yazd and received a master’s degree from Mofeed University, also located in Yazd. The two who are said to be imprisoned for their activities during their student days are also being deprived of legal representation. Their cases have not passed the illegal research phase. |
